ODAWARA ART FOUNDATION

In March 2020, the venerable Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art will have an exciting rebirth
as Kyoto City KYOSERA Museum of Art. One of the inaugural exhibitions celebrating the opening
of the renovated museum will be Hiroshi Sugimoto’s POST VITAM. This first major exhibition
by Hiroshi Sugimoto at a Kyoto museum will reexamine his unique perspective which considers
photography through the intersection of religious, scientific and artistic inquiry.
The exhibition simultaneously takes a fresh look at the state of the Japanese soul amid
centuries of longing for the pure land (jodo) in its myriad incarnations.

Featured in POST VITAM will be twenty works on loan from the Odawara Art Foundation’s
collection including fourteen of Sugimoto’s “Five Elements.”
