Odawara Art Foundation is pleased to announce a new production of a classic performance from Ningyo Joruri Bunraku (Japanese puppet theater).
SUGIMOTO BUNRAKU: ONNAGOROSHI ABURA NO JIGOKU
(THE WOMAN-KILLER AND THE HELL OF OIL)
In 2013 and 2014, Sugimoto Bunraku performed The Love Suicides at Sonezaki in Madrid, Rome, Paris, Tokyo and Osaka in order to facilitate cross-cultural communication through art. The theater in each city was filled to capacity and the program received rave reviews in a wide range of media. In August this year, Odawara Art Foundation will present its second program, Onnagoroshi Abura no Jigoku (The Woman-Killer and the Hell of Oil) at Setagaya Public Theatre in Tokyo.
Also written by Chikamatsu Monzaemon, this story is about a man who impulsively commits a murder of a woman. This interpretation by Hiroshi Sugimoto highlights the horrific murder scene by telescoping the events of the story. The Living National Treasure, Seiji Tsurusawa, once again introduces new musical pieces to illustrate the story.
